I've played games that don't have a "pause" feature and it is very frustrating sometimes trying to remember which bag you put your healing potions in while getting hacked by a rabid orc.įinally, the support from BioWare is fantastic. You can pause the game during combat to decide what you are going to do next, which is nice. I rarely have a crash and the game starts up and loads quickly and smoothly. The music and vocal acting makes it even more enjoyable. NWN is graphically very good, though certainly not the most dazzling game on the market anymore. You can play NWN online as well, however I have not tried this aspect of the game.

If you check out the Neverwinter Vault, where you can download most of these games, you'll see what I mean. Many of these are really outstanding and keep the game fresh. The best thing about NWN is the huge community support: the game is fully moddable and there are a number of people who clearly enjoy creating their own game worlds for you to play in. From there you follow a storyline to the conclusion, fighting monsters, figuring out puzzles and making friends along the way. Some things work, some don't, but part of the fun is experimenting. My first character was a straight-up cleric (one of the easier classes to play, IMO), most recently I'm trying a shapeshifting fighter/druid hybrid. You create your character fro m scratch, choosing his or her attributes, then as you gain levels you can learn certain feats and improve skills that suit your playsyle.

There are you basic Fighter, Mage, Cleric, Thief, Bard, Ranger, Paladin, Druid builds but there have been about a dozen specialty classes added to the original game. I enjoy the variety of characters I can choose from to play.

I played pencil and paper D&D when it first came out and NWN is the closest I've come to having as much fun as I did back in the day of 20 sided dice and malicous DM's. Neverwinter Nights Diamond is a collection of the first 3 Neverwinter Games and "KingMaker" another NWN expansion. Neverwinter Nights is far and away my favorite.

But at 19.99 and with the sheer flexibility of the system, heck you can MAKE the best RPG yourself. This is a game you can kick back with friends and play for a few evenings or delve deep into it and make your own world. Not only is it still the premier online D&D universe, but the dev tools and dm client allows for a magnitude of sheer flexibility not found elsewhere.įor players, there's tons of community modules available to adventure away in - hundreds of good ones and thousands of mediocre ones.
